THE GRITTY MUSICIAN | A Podcast for Musicians in Progress

My name is Bruce, and I am a university music educator. My journey towards a full-time career in music took many twists and turns – some so jarring that I wondered if I had what it took to survive the trip! What came out of these struggles was my grit. Why grit? Grit combines passion, ambition, toughness and strength of character. If you want a career in the arts, grit will be what separates you from the pack. Are you scared about where your career in the arts is headed? Do you wonder if you have what it takes to endure the journey? The Gritty Musician Podcast is here to help you!

Welcome back!  Episode 29, "Failing Forward" is a bit of a mixed bag of a show.  Follow along as best you can!

First and foremost, GSG is now on iHeartRadio! We are expanding our reach to serve you, the listener, better each week.  Check out the weekly Twitter poll for your vote on future episode topics! @getsomegrit

On my most recent Indiana road trip, I listened to the entirety of Steven Pressfield's The War of Art, and consider it one of the finest books I've read in recent memory. Three big "take aways" include:

  1. Pressfield struggled with early professional failures, and his biggest commercial success only came about because he didn't listen to those who told him it would be a failure.
  2. Don't fall victim to comparison!
  3. Resistance to our work is very real, and evil!

You can learn more about Mr. Pressfield at his website, www.stevenpressfield.com

This is followed by a discussion on how to "fail forward" in all that you do, and the dangers of diminished grit once you reach your goals.

I believe that this is one of my better recent episodes, so please don't wait to check it out!
