My name is Bruce, and I am a university music educator. My journey towards a full-time career in music took many twists and turns – some so jarring that I wondered if I had what it took to survive the trip! What came out of these struggles was my grit. Why grit? Grit combines passion, ambition, toughness and strength of character. If you want a career in the arts, grit will be what separates you from the pack. Are you scared about where your career in the arts is headed? Do you wonder if you have what it takes to endure the journey? The Gritty Musician Podcast is here to help you!

In Episode 4, Bruce discusses how worry can cripple a person's ability to live their life at the fullest. When worry fuels your energy and drive, it is a recipe for disaster. By focusing on gratitude rather than worry, there is a shift in your thinking that happens almost immediately.

In episode 3, Bruce uses a quote by Woodrow Wilson and a short passage from the Bible New Testament book of 1 Corinthians to demonstrate the "instructions" he has found for defining his role as one half of a long distance relationship. "You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” - Woodrow Wilson "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) Are you enjoying the show? Tell a friend! In Episode 002, Bruce breaks down how he has had to “relearn” how to take time for activities outside of work that ultimately make his work better and more effective. This has been a struggle for many years, but at least for now, it’s working! here are the steps: 1. Recognize what activity (or activities) best helps you renew yourself for your work. Plan in a way that builds excitement for the activity itself - don't sabotage your recharging! 2. When you reach your destination, allow the activity to be your meditation or practice of mindfulness. It's OK to let thoughts pass through your mind - and mediation isn't a bad word! 3. Know when it is time to plug back in so that the return to work isn't so jarring on Monday morning at 8:00 AM!
